Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ChatAudit

Is the analysis really private?
Yes, everything runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
01

General

Is ChatAudit really free?
Yes, ChatAudit is completely free – no account, no subscription and no premium plan. There are no hidden costs, no trial that expires and no features locked behind a paywall. You can analyze as many chats as you like, as often as you want.
Which platforms and apps are supported?
ChatAudit supports the seven most popular messengers: WhatsApp (.txt export straight from the app), Telegram (JSON export via Telegram Desktop), iMessage (export on a Mac), Signal, Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger (each as a Meta data download), and Discord. Every platform has a detailed step-by-step guide on the Chat Export page – including separate iOS and Android paths for WhatsApp.
Do I need an account or have to install anything?
No. ChatAudit runs entirely in your browser – there's no sign-up, nothing to download and no app to install. You just open the page, upload your chat export and see your analysis instantly. It works the same on a phone, tablet or computer.
Which files and formats can I upload?
It depends on the platform: WhatsApp gives you a .txt file, Telegram and Discord a .json file, and Instagram and Messenger a full .zip data package. ChatAudit detects the format automatically – you can upload the exported file or the whole .zip directly, without unpacking it first. The maximum export size is 200 MB.
Does it work with group chats?
Yes. ChatAudit handles group chats of any size and builds separate stats for every single person – from message counts and response times to their most-used words and emoji. That makes it easy to see who keeps a group alive and who mostly reads along. For Instagram and Messenger it also shows the full member roster, including accounts that have already been deleted.
What happens to shared reels, links and reactions?
Shared links and reels feed into the link stats, reactions count toward the emoji stats, and both show up again in the message search, so shared content stays part of the analysis. The media files themselves – photos, videos, voice messages – are never stored or uploaded; only the text information is analyzed.

Privacy & Security

Where is my chat data stored?
Exclusively on your device. ChatAudit uses your browser's built-in storage, not our servers – your chats are never uploaded and never leave your device. Even after you close the page, your data stays with you and nowhere else.
Can ChatAudit read my chats?
No. The entire analysis runs directly in your browser, on your own device. Neither we nor any third party gets access to your messages, names or content – there simply is no transfer to a server. You can verify it yourself: disconnect from the internet during the analysis and ChatAudit still works.
Who can see my results?
Only you. Your analysis is created and stored entirely on your device – there's no shared account, no public link and no cloud anyone else could read. Nothing leaves your device unless you actively take a screenshot or share it yourself.
How do I delete my data?
Anytime, instantly. You can remove your analysis right in the app with the 'Delete data' button, or simply clear your browser data for ChatAudit. After that everything is gone for good – there are no backups on our side and no retention period, because nothing was ever stored on a server.

How Analysis Works

How accurate is the analysis?
Very accurate – ChatAudit doesn't estimate, it reports exact statistics computed directly from your messages: counts, response times, active hours, word frequencies and more. The numbers match your chat precisely. The more messages you load, the clearer patterns like activity trends or conversation balance become.
How long does the analysis take?
Usually just a few seconds. Because everything runs locally on your device, there's no waiting for uploads or servers – as soon as you pick the file, it's read and analyzed. Very large chats with hundreds of thousands of messages can take a little longer, but typically still finish within seconds.
Which languages are supported?
The ChatAudit interface is available in six languages. The analysis itself works with chats in virtually any language, since it's built on timestamps, senders and words. For the word cloud, common stop words from several major languages are filtered out automatically so the truly relevant terms stand out.
How many messages do I need?
Around 100 messages already give you usable results. For meaningful patterns – such as response times, active periods or conversation balance – 500 messages or more are ideal. There's practically no upper limit: even chats with tens of thousands of messages are processed without issues.
